MAIN STREET BUS STOPS
Like many who use the bus service to and from Torrance, Torrance Community Council are disappointed in the length of time it is taking to repair the bus shelters on Main Street.
The good news is that we are told repairs will now commence between Monday 9th November and Monday 23rd November. We thought is was appropriate to give you an understanding of our involvement in this situation.
On 12th August 2026, we contacted SPT with regards to the Main Street bus stops, which were in astate of disrepair and hazardous to the public. We informed them that the bus stops had been out of use for a few months, but as yet, no repairs had been done and they remained unusable. We received a reply from SPT on 19th August, apologising for the lengthy delay in the shelter repairs. They stated that they had been working with East Dunbartonshire Council to obtain quotes and assess if the shelters are to be repaired or if they are beyond economical repair. They stated that they had now received the relevant quotes, and to be assured that they will continue to follow this matter up with the Council, with a view to reaching a resolution as soon as possible.
On 4th September we forwarded the SPT email to our local councillor Collette McDiarmid to chaseup for us. On the 7th September, Collette informed us that she would speak to estates, and get back to us. On the 9th September, Collette came back to us with the following response;
“With regards to the outstanding repairs, the Traffic and Transport team have been in dialogue with the Bus Development team at SPT in relation to these and have come to an agreement in relation to the quotes. We cannot provide a specific date, but we understand the repairs should be undertaken within the next few weeks.” Collette assured us she would keep an eye on the repairs. On 29th September, we contacted SPT again stating that there still had been no repairs done to the bus stops, and reiterated the danger that they pose to the public who need to use them. We asked them for an estimated timescale of repair so that we could feed back to the public. On 7th October we received a response from SPT stating,
“I am pleased to confirm that we have now successfully secured funding and appointed contractors to undertake the roof upgrade works at the shelters on Main Street, Torrance. We are currently progressing the necessary arrangements with the contractors as a matter of urgency, and work is currently scheduled to start on Monday 12th October, subject to permits being approved. We have been advised that the repairs to both shelters will be completed by the end of October.”
This date was not met. On 19th October, we received a further update from SPT stating,
“I wanted to provide you with an update regarding the bus shelter roof repairs on Main Street,Torrance. Unfortunately, the council were unable to approve the start dates requested due to other works going on in the area. We now have new dates confirmed and the repairs will now commence weeks commencing Monday 9th November and Monday 23rd November.”
On 20th October, Councillor Collette MacDiarmid posted on her Facebook page,
“I am pleased to have confirmation that the bus shelter on Main Street, Torrance are being repaired. Many constituents have been in touch and shared their frustrations with the situation. However, the unavoidable delays were due to the complex nature of repairs, and locating the appropriate contractors”
As you can see, there are conflicting recollections of why there have been such delays. This is extremely disappointing to us as there is no clear explanation. Our next step is to write to both Collette MacDiarmid and Lynda Williamson and ask them to explain these discrepancies.
Meanwhile we would welcome you notifying us of any other issues that you have reported but are not moving forward. Please feel free to come to our monthly meetings, held in the Community Centre on the second Tuesday night of each month, 7.30pm start.
